The Sports Index sports stock market and sports business news posted Friday after closing bell. Year-to-date performance chart for 12-index composite, individual indices, and related market sectors. Full list of charts in weekly newsletter and at STOCKS link

It's not an individual stock but rather a basket of stocks, called an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). In this case, an actively traded mutual fund. And it doesn't even track sports or game stocks primarily. So why is The Sports Index featuring an ETF as our "stock of the week"? We recently noticed that the name "Giannis" can be juxtaposed to the word "Gains" in a sort of makeshift financial anagram. And that's exactly what two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmnmpo is doing with his Calamos Antetokounmpo Global Sustainable Equities ETF (SROI:NYSE ARCA). The ETF has net assets totaling $18.8 million. While that remains a modest sum, the fund was launched in 2023 with a mere $2 million initial outlay. It's YTD Yield is $0.52 and the valuation is trading ▲13.38% YTD, not scorching returns but surely heating up the markets for the Miami Heat's new superstar. The ETF's investment focus is growth companies that employ ESG models (Environmental, Social, Governance). The Sports Index tracks SROI despite that it's not in the hopper of our traditional sports stock market offerings that include sports and games. We do so because SROI enjoys not insignificant sports appeal and marketing power by virtue of its celebrity founder, to our knowledge the first and only professional athlete who has an ETF in his or her name. SROI's 13.38% YTD gain right now is placing third on our Sports/Game ETF Index, which at this juncture is tracked strictly for editorial purposes. Calamos Investments, headquartered in Naperville, IL, is the fund's manager. The company's founder, John Calamos, pioneered the industry of convertible bonds. He and CEO John Koudounis, a college football star, have now created another industry first. Calamos Investments currently has six funds that are traded on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, Chicago Board Options Exchange, New York Stock Exchange, and London Stock Exchange.
